Today we were determined to make up some of the time we lost from the terrible weather we encountered. The day began in Mitchell, South Dakota with 50 degrees, some of us sleeping in, and a plan. This plan included no stops for anything but bathroom breaks. Thanks to James' mom stocking the car up with snacks this plan was possible.
The east side of South Dakota, the booming metropolis that it is, provided us with a series of windmills, and a wide open road with no hills or mountains.
***Question of the day*** BETH and MARK - OFF LIMITS TO BOTH OF YOU!
Next we were on to Blue Earth, SD. James had a friend he wanted me to meet. Does he look familiar to anyone?

We pulled into a planned rest stop and James got his finger stuck inside the hole of the lid for the wipes to slip through. You can't tell in the picture but it was pinching his finger so bad his finger had imprints of the opening for hours!!!

Tonight we cruised through Madison, which is where we initially planned on stopping for the evening. James was a man on a mission and wanted to continue on. Stopping 25 miles shy of Milwaukee, you can all guess what is first on our stop tomorrow, right?
For those interested, James' shorts continued on the road trip with us. They've proven to be loyal, trustworthy and comfortable. I think yesterdays stain has removed itself.
***Additional question of the day*** Beth & Mark, jump in!
Will the shorts see us through the trip?
CLEVELAND HERE WE COME!

Love the pic of Amy with James' friend. I bet "his friend" has fresh shorts on and is not wearing flip flops.
My prediction is that James' shorts will NOT last the trip. If they do, they must be burnt immediately upon arriving in Philly. It may be OK in Seattle but we here in Philly have our standards to uphold.
Any ETA yet?
Let's see. Why would James want to stop in Milwaukee? Hmmm...I bet I can guess why.
hi guys,
u are quite the explorers; i heard some rumors that christopher columbus, desoto, and degama are none too happy with u 2. ho, ho, ho. if this is any incentive for u to drive fast, we are in the throes of an august-type heat wave, with temperatures hovering around 90. hot, hot! by friday, the temps are supposed to plummet, so i hope james brought his flannel shorts for the weather change. speaking of james's shorts, if they don't self-destruct, i wouldn't be surprised if they walked away from him, ashamed of being treated so shabbily. i would love to answer the question of the day, but mark, the stick in the mud, forabde me from guessing. ho, ho, ho. well, u withstood the terrible weather, so the rest of the trip should be a breeze. don't forget to sing 'a hundred bottles of beer on the wall' if u run out of juicy convensation. talk to u soon and can't wait to see u both.
I dont think you should forbid mark and shelly from answering as none of us seem to know the answers!!!!!!!
apprentice group rules...
Looks like quite a journey, cant wait until you arrive!
The Shorts Saga.....
I say that the shorts will prevail. If he's not going to wear them you can alway frame them.
So....Ho Ho Ho...did you have fun visiting James' very large and green friend?
On ward Ho to Milwaukee! Enjoy the journey.
The statue is of Elmer "Len" Dresslar Jr.
Bonus point to the person who figures out how to search for Elmer "Len" Dresslar Jr. on Google to figure out that reference.
Ah, Cleveland. I spent a lovely month there one weekend. Watch out for lake effect it's a killer.
Hey all,
Great pics (Amy I assume). I guess you didn't go to Rushmore. I predict that James shorts make it by a thread. I agree they should be burned upon arrival in Philly (sorry about the Phillies, I wanted them to win), remember my Lenny Dykstra perm Baker? James, do you still have the Washington State Cougar shorts as a replacement?
I love the blog! It has been so much fun reading about "James and Amy's excellent adventure!"
Hope you guys are having a blast!

In 1978, the town of Blue Earth, MN, erected a 55-foot fiberglass statue of the Jolly Green Giant to commemorate the linking of the east and west sections of Interstate 90. The statue attracts over 10,000 visitors a year.
Elmer "Len" Dresslar, Jr. provided the baritone voice of the Jolly Green giant in television commercials, saying only "Ho, ho, ho.
